Green Career Highlight: Environmental Engineering Firms

We are writing a series of articles relating to Green Career, here are some interesting facts we have identified from our research recently.

Green Career is not limited to just technical people only; so anyone with an interest in Green industry should consider this industry.

Environmental Engineering is one area we have highlighted in our Green Career Report with various opportunities:

1/ Water management professionals: In high demand, including water quality measurement, desalination, irrigation management.

2/ Civil engineers: Professional civil engineers are recruited by environmental engineering firms as they are required for infrastructure projects.

3/ Financial professionals: Interestingly, they are recruiting more and more financial graduates; who are often required to provide project cost estimation for infrastructure projects. This is often a skill often lacked in engineering firms, if you are a financial graduate, this can be an opportunity for you.

Additionally, many engineering firms are also major project financiers; and this has also created demand for financial positions.

4/ Air Quality Control: Apart from the Government departments, environmental engineering firms are perhaps the largest employers of air quality specialists.

These range from entry-positions such as air quality samplers/collectors to air quality data analysts which include both field technicians and laboratory technicians.

5/ Multi-lingual sales & business development managers: Our research has shown US environmental engineering firms are one of the fastest exporting sector, there has been a surging demand in Chinese, Spanish and Arabic speaking professionals from these firms.

6/ Corporate Advisors: An interesting development in the environmental engineering sector, I was asked by 3 engineering firms last year to prepare Business Plan and Information Memorandum for their clients. Our research has also confirmed this trend where engineering firms are also involved in the business advisory services.

7/ Certifiers: Apart from the popular certification programs like LEED or equivalent certification programs; engineering firms are often required by green technology companies to undertake assessment of their new technologies; and such assessments are often included as part of their business plan, capital raising document or to apply for grants. If you have experience in particular research areas; you may consider to apply your skills as part of these R&D / Technology assessment opportunities with environmental engineering firms.
